![]() A guard raised his pistol, but hesitated. In a thundering gallop, they smashed through the prison entrance, shrieking like bloodthirsty marauders. The Hellshire Gang pledged their loyalty to Caleb and called for the warden's head. He'd been sold out, a pawn in a rich man's game. Caleb's heart pounded with rage, blood swelling as if it would burst from his veins. In the picture, a disfigured Bayshore proudly shook the warden's hand. After a bloody battle at Glenvale, Caleb caught notice of a newspaper headline: Henry Bayshore Purchases Hellshire Penitentiary. ![]() For six years, they roamed the country collecting wanted outlaws for the prison, fulfilling their end of the bargain. Looking to protect his asset, the prison warden pulled strings and released Irish inmates to form Caleb's posse. After several iterations, the disembowelments dwindled, but Caleb had already earned his new nickname: The Deathslinger. But as the spear tugged, it caught the thief's intestines, and, with an ungodly sound, yanked them onto the dusty road. Metal joints screeched as the spike shot forward, gouging into the target's abdomen. Seizing on the opportunity, Caleb unleashed his prototype. The first trial occurred when a thief robbed a Chinese laundry. Use ingenuity to bring outlaws in alive.Ĭaleb returned to his workshop, and with a few modifications emerged with something new - the speargun. He spoke of something greater than monetary wealth - political capital - and that his connections could have Bayshore framed and rotting behind bars for life. After a time, the warden offered to commute his sentence. He designed torture devices for him and in return received extra meals. In a fortress of illiterate convicts, he found an unlikely friend in the educated prison warden. For fifteen years, Caleb was confined to Hellshire Penitentiary, the nation's first private prison. The only thing that saved Caleb from hanging was Bayshore's unlikely survival. A railroad spike ploughed through skin and viscera, nailing Bayshore to his desk. As he was pulled away, he pushed his specialised gun to his boss' gut and squeezed the trigger. Rage overwhelming him, he burst into Bayshore's office and smashed his face into a bloody stew. But as Bayshore feigned indifference, the devices began turning up at other companies, the patents stolen from Caleb and sold.Ī familiar sensation coursed through Caleb's blood, feeding the sharp pain in his heart. Next, he made a steam-powered tunnelling drill. ![]() ![]() Henry Bayshore, the owner of United West Rail, hired him.Ĭaleb first invented a gun that shot railroad spikes into the ground. With age, Caleb's engineering abilities became marketable and employers put their discrimination aside. He hid plans for a mask that would gouge barbed needles into a human's eyes and rip them from their sockets, complete with sketches of it fitted on boys who bullied him. The devices Caleb made under his father's guidance had quaint applications, but when his father was away, they took a grim turn. Noticing his son's interest in the trade, he gifted him his old wrench. His antiquated tools laid untouched for years until Caleb uncovered them. Caleb's father, once an engineer, had few options to ply his trade as businesses posted a common sign: No Irish Need Apply. On the edge of the frontier, sickness, famine, and death were common sights, and pioneers contended for whatever scraps they could claim while tycoons feasted. Born in the dust-ridden badlands of the American Midwest, Caleb Quinn was son to struggling Irish immigrants. ![]() Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose. Pure Paste for Montereyįor a smoother and more flexible way of pasting plain text by default, check out Pure Paste. It’s a fine workaround for infrequent use, but it’s slow and inefficient. This approach works because BBEdit and similar apps pay no attention to text styling-they care only about the characters. If you already use a plaintext editor like BBEdit, a simple way to strip that unwanted formatting is to paste the text into a new document, select all, copy again, and paste it in its final destination. Quick and Clunky: Run It through a Plaintext Editor Here are some alternative approaches that should work anywhere. Occasionally, however, you’ll find yourself in a situation where there seems to be no way to strip styling while pasting. That works in many apps, although the slightly simpler Command-Shift-V is also frequently used-it’s what you’ll find in Adobe InDesign, Nisus Writer Pro, and even the Web interface of Google Docs.įor the vast majority of situations, the built-in approach is all you need. He’ll start off with a moving bait in hopes of maximizing his efficiency, but if there are no takers, he likes to slow it down with a bottom-contact presentation. ![]() Once he finds a good-looking area and pinpoints a high-percentage piece of isolated cover with his Garmin units, McDonald keeps his bait selection surprisingly simple. ![]() I shoot my Panoptix 75 to 100 feet in front of the boat.” Instead of running your boat over the cover and spooking fish, you can see it way ahead of time. I can pan the trolling motor and find outer edges of grass, root wads, hidden laydowns, stumps, rock piles… you name it. It shoots a 20-degree wide angle and a 135-degree wide vertical angle. “While you can see the fish in real-time, I prefer to use it to find pieces of cover. “It really has been a huge player for me,” McDonald said. He has the utmost confidence in his units and has learned them quite well. Because this is where current-washed cover accumulates, it’s a great place to find a lone log that’s holding a big fish.Īs earlier stated, a huge part of McDonald’s approach revolves around his Garmin Panoptix. He also urgers anglers to seek out any down-current river bend. “If I can find an area where a ditch meets a creek channel or maybe the last bend in the ditch before it hits the creek channel, I’m going to dissect it looking for something isolated.” “I’m looking for depressions a lot of the time,” McDonald said. While in the rivers, he looks for isolated cover in two particular types of areas. Sometimes just a few degrees can make an enormous difference. While it does fit his fishing style best, he also noted the importance of cooler water temperatures. In the late summer, McDonald prefers to head up-river on most fisheries. Now that we understand the “why” behind this technique, let’s explore the “how”. ![]() Isolated cover, whether it’s a single stump, a grass clump or a few rocks, gives big bass that exact opportunity. They want to “own” and piece of cover and be able to feed without constant competition. They don’t want to run around with a bunch of 14-inchers and be forced to out-compete them for food. As they age and become larger, they become much more territorial of their space. In addition to finding and having small sweet spots to yourself, it’s also important to understand the way a big bass thinks. Almost every single fish I’ve caught has holes in their lips.” “But yesterday I caught a 5-pound, 6-ounce smallmouth with a hook hole in its mouth. “Sturgeon Bay is a huge place,” McDonald said. He was shocked by the amount of fishing pressure throughout his practice. We conducted our interview while McDonald was at Sturgeon Bay practicing for the FLW Tackle Warehouse TITLE Presented by Toyota. So now, more than ever, it’s important to put the time into finding small, isolated pieces of cover that aren’t being fished.” This has really changed the more traditional bites throughout much of the country and I really think it’s because more of them are being hooked. “You pull up to a boat ramp and it’s absolutely packed all week long everybody is fishing. “With the pandemic going on, this is a year like none other in terms of fishing pressure,” McDonald said. The result, of course, is a drastic increase in fishing pressure and more skittish bass. Due to COVID-19, a droves of people are fishing throughout the entire week. McDonald believes isolated cover is even more important in today’s world. But those special pieces of isolated cover don’t get beat on very much so those fish are a lot more likely to bite.” “Fish definitely figure that out quickly and fishing pressure will cause them to move I’ve seen it a lot throughout my career. “Everyone finds the obvious stuff,” McDonald said. ![]() While it’s tempting to get in the thickest cover you can find, more isolated cover can actually pay bigger dividends. As anglers, we’re naturally going to flock to the best-looking and most obvious cover on the lake when we begin our search for big bass. ![]() Releases included 1998's John Mellencamp, 1999's Rough Harvest, 2001's Cuttin Heads, and 2003's Trouble No More.
